Don’t miss our joint session with the American College of Surgeons, “The Art of Medicine: Redefining the Patient Experience for Quality, Improved Outcomes, and Value,” presented by: Douglas E. Rosendale, D.O., FACOS, FACS; Mandip S. Atwal, D.O., FACOS; Frank G. Opelka, M.D., FACS; and Mark A. Malangoni, M.D., FACS taking place at 4:15 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in conjunction with the 2015 Annual Clinical Assembly.

There are no proxies for high quality surgical care. Value is based on measurable risk adjusted by clinical outcomes at an affordable cost. This session will address the nuanced approaches surgeons can take in order to provide value to patients and how personalized care of the future depends on aligning our combined efforts. The presenters will discuss a variety of factors, including clinical evidence, patient reported outcomes, osteopathic principles, holistic approaches to patient care, and improved processes culminating in a "learning health system." Whether it be pragmatic adherence to evidence based guidelines, greater listening, biomechanics and the "touch factor", or spiritual mentoring, developing a relationship with the patient – building trust- is an essential component of surgical care. What is the nexus of art and science of surgical care? This joint presentation will tackle the barriers and opportunities for a healthier future for surgical patients.
