Christopher Mussman, D.O. Receives AOF/ACOS Outstanding Resident of the Year in Surgery Award

The American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) have named Christopher Mussman, D.O., as the 2017 Outstanding Resident of the Year in Surgery. The award was presented during Honors 2017, the AOF's annual fundraising event, on October 6, 2017 in Philadelphia.

Dr. Mussman earned his D.O. degree from Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012 and a Master's of Science in Biology from Western Illinois University in 2008. In June 2017, he completed a general surgery residency at Franciscan Health, where he was chief resident. His goal was not just to survive, but to thrive: "Today's training world requires a leader to exceed the expectations placed upon him. I try to exemplify osteopathy with every patient while raising the academic standard of my residency program."

The Outstanding Resident of the Year Award recognizes the best and brightest D.O. residents in postdoctoral training programs across the country. These outstanding trainees show a unique combination of clinical promise, leadership, dedication and commitment to osteopathic patient centered care that truly sets them apart from their peers. Many go on to become national and world leaders in health care or research.

In 2017, the AOF partnered with ten osteopathic specialty colleges, including the ACOS, to honor future leaders of the osteopathic medical profession. “These partnerships enhance the prestige of the award while expanding the number of truly excellent osteopathic trainees we can recognize,” said AOF Executive Director Stephen S. Downey, CAE, CFRE. Each winning resident receives a $5,000 monetary gift.
