General Surgery In-Service Exam

On January 14, 2017, 634 general surgery osteopathic residents sat for the General Surgery In-Service Exam at 50 locations across the United States.  Results are in the process of being “key-validated” and then psychometrically evaluated and the results should be distributed to program directors within the next 30 days.  It is incumbent upon the program directors to discuss the results of the In-Service Exam with their residents which is an item appearing on both the resident’s evaluation of the program and the program director’s evaluation of the resident. The purpose of the exam is to assist program directors in the evaluation of the resident’s level of knowledge relative to other residents’ knowledge at the same level of training, to identify a resident’s area of weakness, and track a resident’s progress.  There is no passing score for the exam, which is a diagnosis-oriented, criterion-referenced achievement test that measures the degree to which residents have mastered the General Surgery Residency Model curriculum.  The cumulative programmatic results of the test are also used by the RESC as an indicator in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each residency program.  If you have any questions or require additional information regarding the exam or the receipt of the results, contact Susan Rall at [email protected].
