Annual Resident Reports Overdue

Annual Resident Reports were due in the ACOS offices no later than June 30, 2017.  We are still receiving reports! Over 750 individual annual resident reports were expected to be submitted for review by the Residency Evaluation and Standards Committee (RESC) at their August meeting. ACOS staff is reviewing the reports to make sure that they are complete and are checking for clarity and compliance. Residents and program directors will be notified if their reports are incomplete. Late fees will be levied on a resident if the report is deferred and the training year might be deferred if the Annual Resident Report does not meet the criteria required by the RESC.

Nominations for 2017 - 2018 Residents Section Governing Council

The Nominating Committee of the Residents Section Governing Council will finalize a slate of officer nominees next month. Elected positions to be voted on are: Chair Elect, Secretary/Treasurer, and Member-at-Large. A second Member-at-Large position is appointed to serve as the resident member on the Residency Evaluation and Standards Committee.

Elections will be held at the Residents Section Annual Business Meeting scheduled during the Annual Clinical Assembly in National Harbor, MD on Thursday, October 12 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.  If nominated, you are encouraged to attend the meeting in order to increase your chances of election.

Surgical Educators Seminar

Program Directors and surgical residency teaching faculty are reminded to register for the Surgical Educators Seminar taking place on Saturday, October from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm in conjunction with the 2017 Annual Clinical Assembly in National Harbor, MD. Program directors are required to attend the Surgical Educators Seminar at least once every two years.   

The annual seminar is designed for anyone involved in the education and training of residents and provides a forum for educators to discuss common and emerging issues affecting their training programs. Faculty and program directors of AOA-approved residency training programs are encouraged to attend. ACOS program directors and site directors are required to attend this seminar at least once every two years.

The last three Surgical Educators Seminars have addressed the application process for the ACGME Single Accreditation System. The 2017 seminar will feature two didactic sessions that will provide attendees with the information to apply for and maintain ACGME Osteopathic Track in their programs and the tools needed to handle residents with academic and behavioral challenges. Franklin J. Medio, PhD, who is back by popular demand, will conduct a session on dealing with difficult learners; and Robert Cain, D.O., FCOI and Valerie Sheridan, D.O., FACOS, will discuss the option of incorporating an ACGME Osteopathic Track into residency programs.
