Here's how your membership pays for itself:

  • Lobbying to ensure that osteopathic surgeons' viewpoints are addressed by the federal government;
  • Reduced member registration fees for ACOS CME programs;
  • Seminars on how to manage your surgical practice at the Annual Clinical Assembly;
  • The Career Center, a comprehensive on-line job board;
  • A patient brochure for your office that describes the training and credentialing of an osteopathic surgeon;
  • Monthly ACOS News with legislative updates;
  • 24/7 access to the Member's Only area of the ACOS website, including the on-line member directory;
  • Eligibility to be nominated for ACOS awards; and
  • Resident members receive evaluation of their annual training reports (non-members seeking approval of training are charged a $250 fee).

ACOS dues and ACOS discipline dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes. ACOS dues may be tax deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense subject to restrictions imposed by the 1993 Revenue Reconciliation Act because ACOS engages in lobbying on behalf of its members.

ACOS estimates that 12.6% of the 2008-2009 ACOS dues are allocable to lobbying activities on behalf of its members and therefore are not tax deductible. Contributions to the ACOS Trust Fund may be tax deductible as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes to the extent allowed by law. Members should consult a tax professional concerning the deductibility of these payments.
