SOSA Spring 2019 Convention Recap

The ACOS held it's SOSA (Student Osteopathic Surgical Association) Convention March 30th - 31st. The conference was hosted by Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) in St. George, Utah. As in year's past, there was great participation in this year's conference, with 137 student participants from 27 schools of osteopathic medicine. This year's instructors included:

  • Richard Scheuring, D.O.
NASA flight surgeon who practices space medicine
  • Lawrence Maccree, D.O.
Neurosurgeon and Neurological Surgery Program Chair for the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons
  • Michael Janssen, D.O.
Orthopedic surgeon who pioneered "total disc replacement" procedure

Highlights from this year's conference include:

  • Dr. Michael Manning, D.O., performed 2 hip replacements and 2 knee replacements on a cadaver. Students were not only able to observe; they were also able to assist.
  • Very popular with students was the da Vinci robot, which was on hand for student demonstrations.
  • There was an Ultrasound IV access workshop. Students performed anastomoses on the military-created Surgical Cut Suit High-tech simulation workshops with SimMan and SimMom manikins.
