Past President Walter Wilson, D.O., FACOS

American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) Past President and Life Member, Walter L. Wilson, DO, FACOS, 83, of Tulsa, passed away on February 27.

After graduating from the Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1957, Dr. Wilson completed an osteopathic internship and general surgery residency at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital (OOH) where he went to serve as chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Wilson was an initiator in the founding of the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery (OCOMS). He served as a professor at OCOMS for many years and as chair of the Board of Regents. He enjoyed being an educator and training residents to become future surgeons. Dr. Wilson practiced in Tulsa for his entire career until retiring in 2005.

Dr. Wilson served as president of ACOS in 1987 and was recognized with the Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award in 2003. He also served on the American Osteopathic Association Board of Trustees and as president of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association (OOA) in 1977. He was honored as Doctor of the Year in 1983 by the OOA and with the Outstanding & Distinguished Service Award in 1988.

A joint memorial service for Dr. Wilson and his wife, Betty, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 7 at Kirk of the Hills, 4102 East 61st Street, Tulsa, OK, 74136.
