Advocacy

From the steps of the Capitol to the hallways of state capitals, ACOS is dedicated to keeping you informed and updated on all legislative and regulatory policy making.

The ACOS readily monitors federal legislative and regulatory proposals involving the practice of surgery and works in cooperation with other national medical and surgical associations to protect the ability of the osteopathic surgical profession to provide quality care. Through its involvement with coalitions of other physician organizations, ACOS strives to ensure that the viewpoints of osteopathic surgeons are heard by Congress and federal agencies.

As a member of the College, you will receive multiple communications from the College outlining the College’s positions and advocacy activities that the College is engaged in.

  • The ACOS Brief provides you with current legislation and regulatory actions that will impact your profession. The Brief will provide an in the moment snapshot of legislation working its way through Congress and will allow you to take action by contacting your Member of Congress.
  • The Washington Watch, a part of ACOS News, is a monthly article highlighting Congressional actions, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services policy statements, health policy reports and actions taken by other health care professional associations.
  • The Advocacy Corner, another part of the ACOS News, is a monthly column by the Manager of Health Policy discussing ongoing policy discussions being held here in Washington, DC and across the country. The Corner also provides discussions on effective advocacy and ways in which members can engage in advocacy activities.

Also, ACOS members can help shape the College’s public policy through volunteer participation on the Government Affairs Committee and the Quality Initiatives Committee.
