Resident Section Nominees

Want to become more involved as a resident member of the ACOS? We are currently accepting nominations for the 2018-2019 Resident Section Governing Council. Open positions include: Chair-elect, Secretary/Treasurer, Member-at-Large and Research Ambassador. If you are elected to the one-year term, you will be a voice of the Osteopathic Surgical Resident.

Did you know...

ACOS has reduced the annual dues rate of resident membership to $25.00.
• If you present a poster at the ACA, the registration rate for the conference is reduced.
• Urological Surgery Residents Members are eligible for a Discipline Sponsored Book Stipend of up to $350.00.
• Resident Section Officers receive travel reimbursement for travel to the ACA and other required meetings.

Elections will take place at the Resident Section Annual Business Meeting, hosted on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the Annual Clinical Assembly, Atlanta, GA. We encourage all resident members to attend!

2019 General Surgery In-Service Exam

The 2019 General Surgery In-Service Examination will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2019. Registration will open early October. This year, ACOS and NBOME will use an online registration system and will also include an option to utilize iPad technology as an additional resource to deliver the exam. More information of the new processes to follow.

Surgical Educators Seminar

Hosted by the ACOS Residency Evaluation and Standards Committee (RESC), the Surgical Educators Seminar at the Annual Clinical Assembly of Osteopathic Surgeons, is designed for anyone involved in the education and training of residents. This educational seminar addresses the trending topics and provides a forum for educators to discuss common and emerging issues affecting their training programs. Faculty and program directors are encouraged to attend. As a reminder, ACOS program directors and site directors are required to attend this seminar at least once every two years, as this is a valuable tool for educators. Past topics include “Meeting the Training Demands of Today’s Resident”, “ACGME Accreditation and your Surgical Program” and “Tools for Residents with Academic and Behavioral Challenges”.

The Surgical Educators Seminar will be on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the ACA in Atlanta, GA. The theme and speakers for this years seminar will be announced in September. We hope to see you there!

Mentoring Workshop

Surgeons motivated to become mentors and those seeking mentoring are invited to participate in an interactive lecture and speed mentoring workshop designed to develop skills useful in both personal and professional life. Hosted in Atlanta, GA at the Annual Clinical Assembly, Saturday October 20, from 9:30am-12:00pm, this workshop is eligible for 2.5 Category 1-A CME for eligible registrants.

There are no additional fees associated with this workshop. Residents, retired and practicing surgeons of all specialties are encouraged to attend. When registering for the 2018 Annual Clinical Assembly, select ACOS General Surgery Mentoring Workshop.

The ACOS actively participates in a strong mentorship program to support the entry, retention and progression of future ACOS Leaders. This program is sponsored by the ACOS General Surgery Discipline.

ACGME Single Accreditation

To date, 41 programs from ACOS achieved ACGME Initial Accreditation in the specialties of General Surgery (28), Urological Surgery (8), Neurological Surgery (2), Critical Care Surgery (2) and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1). As a reminder, once initial accreditation is achieved, re-inspection will occur within one year.
